Five fun rainbow crafts for kids this Pride Month

Family Fun Zone

Contrary to popular belief, Pride Month isn’t only about adults and their pursuit of equality and respect. In fact, children can have fun celebrating the LBGTQ community and its many colorful members as well! That’s why we’ve put together this list of five fun rainbow crafts for kids to get them started. They won’t even realize they’re learning about history and current affairs while they make these crafts with you, but you can easily make crafting a learning activity by discussing the meaning of the rainbow in the context of LGBTQ+ pride!

Why is the Pride Flag a Rainbow?

The flag we know as the LGBTQ+ pride flag today was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, who was urged to do so by Harvey Milk, a prominent, openly gay politician in the 1970’s. Baker wanted to communicate that diversity of sexual preference and gender is a natural thing, so he based the pride flag on what he believed was nature’s flag: the rainbow! Each color in the pride flag stands for something that LGBTQ+ culture celebrates. The original rainbow pride flag had eight stripes, but the one we usually see today has six.

RED is for LIFE.

ORANGE is for HEALING.

YELLOW is for SUNLIGHT.

GREEN is for NATURE.

BLUE is for SERENITY.

PURPLE is for SPIRIT.

You can talk about these colors and the characteristics they represent as you craft with your child. It’s a great way to teach them about LGBTQ+ culture and history while exploring the emotional properties and connotations of colors.
